**Answer:** Section 9E of the Mental Health Act permits restraint or seclusion only when authorised by a mental health practitioner and only where it is the sole means of preventing immediate harm to the person or others. It must not last longer than strictly necessary, must be humane and supervised, and every instance, with reasons, nature and extent, must be recorded in the medical record. The supporter, representative or guardian must be notified within 24 hours, and facilities report restraint and seclusion use monthly to the Board.
