# What should I do in a medical or mental health emergency?

**Answer:** If someone is in immediate danger, or may harm themselves or another person, get help now. In Kenya, call 999, 112 or 911 for emergency services. For urgent emotional support, the Kenya Red Cross toll-free line is 1199. Outside Kenya, call your local emergency number. Online tools, messages and patient portals are not for emergencies, because they may not be read straight away.

### What to do right now

- Call emergency services if anyone is in immediate danger. Do not wait for a reply to a message or portal request.
- Stay with the person if it is safe to do so, and remove anything they could use to hurt themselves.
- For urgent emotional support in Kenya, call the Kenya Red Cross toll-free line on 1199.
- Once the person is safe, contact their usual clinician or care team so follow-up can be arranged.

### Why online tools are not for emergencies

Messages, forms and patient portals may not be read straight away. Your clinic may be closed, or staff may be with other patients. In an emergency, always phone for help directly.
