**Answer:** The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test measures how long a person takes to stand up from a chair, walk a short distance, turn, walk back and sit down. It gives a quick view of functional mobility and balance. Clinicians also watch transfer technique, gait, turning, aid use and confidence. A slow time suggests mobility limitation, but the TUG should not be used alone to predict falls; it is read alongside falls history and a broader assessment.

### Getting reliable results

Standardisation is essential. Keep chair height, walking distance, footwear, instructions and mobility aid the same when comparing results over time.

- A walking aid can be used if it reflects the person's usual mobility and is documented.
- Record movement quality and safety observations, not only the time.
- Combine the result with falls history, medication, home hazards and other balance measures.

> **Important:** Use guarding when falls risk is present and stop if the person becomes unstable, dizzy or medically unwell.

> **Important:** If there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, contact emergency services now. In Kenya, call 999, 112 or 911. Outside Kenya, use the emergency number for your location.
