**Answer:** The Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) measures how far a person can walk in six minutes along a measured course using standardised instructions. It is a submaximal test of functional walking endurance and exercise capacity, not a maximal exercise test. Clinicians record distance, symptoms, rest breaks, aids and relevant vital signs. It needs appropriate safety screening and monitoring, and should not go ahead if the person is medically unstable.

### What affects the result

Course length, encouragement, learning effect, oxygen use, footwear, aids, fatigue and medical status can all change performance.

- A walking aid can be used if it is documented and used consistently at retest.
- Repeat the test under the same conditions to track change over time.
- Use an approved protocol and have an emergency plan in place.

> **Important:** Do not proceed when the person is medically unstable. Stop for chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, concerning oxygen desaturation or other urgent symptoms.
