**Answer:** Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after a frightening or horrific event, such as violence, assault, a crash or a disaster. Symptoms include reliving the event in memories or nightmares, avoiding reminders, and feeling constantly on edge. Most people exposed to trauma do not develop PTSD, and effective talking therapies exist. If symptoms last for weeks or affect daily life, see a health worker.
