**Answer:** A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health and can usually diagnose conditions and prescribe and monitor medication. A clinical psychologist is trained in psychology and provides psychological assessment and therapy, but usually does not prescribe. Therapist is a broader term: a therapist may be a psychologist, counsellor, social worker, psychiatric nurse or other trained professional. Exact roles vary by country, so check qualifications and registration.

### How the roles compare

- Psychiatrists are medical doctors. They are often involved when symptoms are severe, complex or high risk, or when medication is being considered.
- Clinical psychologists use psychological assessment, formulation and structured therapies. Most do not prescribe medication.
- Therapist describes a service, not one profession. Counsellors, social workers, psychologists and psychiatric nurses may all provide therapy.
- Who can diagnose depends on the professional's training, registration, country and clinic policy.

### Working together

Mental health care is often team-based. A person may start with primary care, see a counsellor or therapist for sessions and a psychiatrist for a medication review. Whatever the title, check the provider's recognised qualifications, registration, scope of practice and willingness to refer when your needs fall outside it.

> **Important:** Who is qualified to treat you depends on the clinic and on professionals who are licensed or authorised under Kenyan rules. Ask about a provider's qualifications and registration.

> **Important:** If there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, contact emergency services now. In Kenya, call 999, 112 or 911. Outside Kenya, use the emergency number for your location.
