**Answer:** Some conditions, such as bipolar disorder, can run in families, so genes play a part. But genes are only one factor; life events, stress, physical health and support also matter, and many people with a family history never develop a condition. If you are worried, tell your doctor about your family history, especially before or during pregnancy, and learn the early signs so you can seek help early.
