# How should therapists share information with a client's psychiatrist or GP?

**Answer:** Section 3H of the Mental Health Act allows disclosure where necessary for treatment, but good practice is to explain and agree information-sharing with the client first and record their consent. Share only what the other clinician needs, such as risk, diagnosis or working formulation, current interventions and outcome scores, through a secure channel. The Data Protection Act requires health data to be processed by or under a healthcare provider or someone bound by professional secrecy.
