# How should a therapist end therapy ethically?

**Answer:** Kenya's National Tele-Mental Health Guidelines describe ending sessions when goals are met, and stopping or changing format if there is no improvement or deterioration, a need for emergency or specialist care, significant discomfort for either party, or a need for in-person work. Good practice is to discuss ending early, review progress and outcome measures, agree a relapse-prevention or follow-up plan, offer referrals, and document the reasons. Avoid ending abruptly when a client is at risk.
