**Answer:** Functional mobility is assessed by watching how a person manages everyday movement: rolling, sitting up, standing, transfers, walking indoors and outdoors, stairs, uneven ground and use of mobility aids. Clinicians look at safety, assistance needed, speed, endurance and movement quality, and may use structured gait observation or tests such as the Five Times Sit-to-Stand. Results matter most when they reflect the tasks and environments that are important to the person.

### What clinicians assess

- Gait: speed, step pattern, symmetry, foot clearance, turning and adapting to obstacles or uneven surfaces.
- Five Times Sit-to-Stand: how quickly a person rises from a chair five times. Chair height, arm use, footwear and pain affect the result, so record them.
- Mobility aids: check fit, technique and safety. A correctly selected and taught aid can improve independence.
- Home context: testing in the home can help when the environment strongly affects performance.

Record the task, assistance, device, distance, time, symptoms, quality and conditions so repeat tests are comparable. Walking speed alone is not enough: transfers, safety and endurance matter too.

> **Important:** Use appropriate guarding and stop if there is chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, new neurological change or unsafe fatigue.

> **Important:** If there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, contact emergency services now. In Kenya, call 999, 112 or 911. Outside Kenya, use the emergency number for your location.
