**Answer:** Physiotherapists assess balance through history, observation and standardised tests of sitting, standing, reaching, turning, stepping and walking. Tools such as the Berg Balance Scale, which scores 14 balance tasks, help track change over time. The right test depends on the person's condition, ability, falls history and the decisions the clinician needs to make. No single score explains falls risk, so results are combined with function, medical factors, fear of falling and the person's real environment.

### What a balance assessment looks at

Assessment may cover sensory input, strength, reaction speed, postural control, confidence, dual-task ability, walking, transfers, medication and home hazards.

- The Berg Balance Scale samples static and dynamic tasks and gives a total score that can be tracked, but it cannot predict every fall and suits some patients better than others.
- Someone with normal standing balance may still fall when turning, walking, tired or in a demanding environment.
- Fear of falling matters: it can reduce activity and confidence even when physical tests look reasonable.
- Retest at meaningful review points using the same tool, footwear, aids and conditions.
- Use the official version and scoring instructions, with trained assessors.

> **Important:** Testing should use suitable guarding, footwear, space and assistive devices. Do not provoke unsafe loss of balance without protection.

> **Important:** If there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, contact emergency services now. In Kenya, call 999, 112 or 911. Outside Kenya, use the emergency number for your location.
