**Answer:** Section 14 allows the person in charge of a facility to admit or retain someone involuntarily if a qualified practitioner finds mental illness with a serious likelihood of imminent harm, or severe illness with impaired judgement where not admitting would cause serious deterioration or block necessary treatment, applying the least restrictive alternative. Applications come from a supporter, representative, guardian (for minors) or, failing them, a carer or relative, with a medical practitioner's recommendation. Admission lasts only while needed; stays beyond six months need review and consent from the supporter, representative or guardian.
