# Why is my physiotherapy not working?

**Answer:** Physiotherapy may seem not to be working when the diagnosis, goals, treatment dose, home practice, barriers or expectations need review. Recovery rates vary, so slow progress does not mean failure. The condition may have changed, the plan may not match the main problem, exercise dosage may be unsuitable, or sleep, work, mood, money or transport may be getting in the way. Lack of progress should prompt a reassessment with your physiotherapist rather than blame or simply continuing the same plan.

### What a reassessment should cover

- Symptoms and any new warning signs
- Your goals and whether they still fit
- Exercise technique, dosage and how often you can do them
- Other health conditions, medicines and personal barriers
- Whether another professional should be involved

Exercises should not simply be made harder without this review. Consider another opinion when the diagnosis is uncertain, risks change or progress stays limited despite a fair trial. Worsening neurological signs, signs of illness, severe unexplained pain or a major loss of function need prompt medical review.
