# Can we charge an SHA patient more than the SHA tariff?

**Answer:** Only in limited cases. SHA's contract bans charging for anything within the benefit package, tariff and limits. Where the tariff does not cover cost, or the patient chooses something beyond the package, a 'reasonable and customary charge' is allowed only if it covers just the excess, does not exceed your public price list, the patient is told about any free alternative, receives an itemised written quotation and gives written consent on SHA's form, and this is recorded on SHA's platform. Anything else counts as co-charging and is recoverable from the facility.
