**Answer:** Depression is not a normal part of ageing. Older adults face risks such as loneliness, bereavement, illness, pain, loss of income and abuse, and mental health problems are often missed in later life. Signs can include withdrawal, poor sleep, low appetite or memory complaints. Treatment works at any age, so encourage an older relative to see a health worker and stay socially connected.
