**Answer:** Yes, they can. Heavy drinking and drug use can trigger or worsen anxiety, depression and sleep problems, and drugs such as cannabis can trigger psychosis in some people. Many people use substances to cope with distress, which can become a cycle. Help is available for both problems together, so tell your health worker honestly about any use. NACADA runs a free, 24-hour helpline on 1192 for counselling and referrals.
