# Can a patient pay through SHA and private insurance for the same treatment?

**Answer:** Patients may hold private cover alongside SHA, and SHA's claim form asks whether the patient has another health insurer. How costs are split between SHA and a private insurer depends on the insurer's policy and any coordination arrangement, so confirm with both payers before treatment. Never claim the same service in full from both. Record which payer covers which part, and treat any balance charged to an SHA member as subject to SHA's top-up rules.
